I am in the process of working with several other artists to start a non-profit arts ministry for the homeless in DC. This is very much God's vision and I feel very lucky to even play the smallest part in it. These are our ideas (still a work in progress!):
Mission Statement: ART 4 MISSION exists to encourage, inspire, and empower homeless people in Washington, DC by providing opportunities to create, exhibit, and sell artwork.
Who we are: · ART 4 MISSION is a group of local artists who desire to use their talents and gifts to serve the disadvantaged in our community. · ART 4 MISSION believes that creativity and art are beneficial to all people and are a means of bringing about equality between widely different groups.
What we do: · ART 4 MISSION hopes to provide a safe place for the homeless of Washington, DC to meet like-minded people and create art. · ART 4 MISSION plans to organize regular art sessions, supported by local artists, and to provide art materials. These art sessions will not be classes (though artists may offer helpful hints or few techniques), but opportunities to nurture creativity and self-expression of participants. ART 4 MISSION is not about talent or product, but about the process of making art and self-discovery. · ART 4 MISSION will hold an annual show and sale event to raise money to assist participating artists and to support the organization’s mission. Eventually, ART 4 MISSION hopes to open an art shop/gallery to sell the works of homeless artists alongside other artists in the community. · ART 4 MISSION does not presume to solve the problem of homelessness, but hopes to create a lighter journey by returning a sense of joy and pride to individuals in the homeless community.
Goals and Objectives: · To bring together and encourage artists, homeless, and others in the community through artistic expression. · To build community and form relationships through engagement in the arts. · To provide a refuge and safe place for homeless people to come for a few hours every week to escape the struggles of surviving on the streets, finding shelter, food, etc. · To empower the homeless, build self-confidence in participants. · To instill a sense of pride by exhibiting (in a professional setting) the artwork created at the art sessions throughout the year. · To provide a format for professional and homeless artists to meet and exhibit together with the hope of finding unity and common ground through the shared language of art. · To change perceptions in the community about homelessness through annual events and exhibits; to give a face to homelessness through art. · To give members of the community the opportunity to meet the homeless individuals we serve and better understand their diverse hopes and dreams. · To be flexible enough to change in order to meet needs that arise within the community and to follow God's leading.
